Why can’t we be friends?
As you all can probably tell, I am a huge Once Upon a Time fan. I love the concept, the actors, and the storylines. Only a few of my friends are Once Upon a Time fans so I took to twitter to find some other fans to talk to. I love hearing different perspectives on the show and predictions on what’s going to happen. I’ve met some pretty cool people so far, however, I’ve also witnessed certain things in the fandom that frustrate me. Most of this frustration has to do with ships.
While the majority of the fandom seem like absolutely amazing people, there are some who frustrate me. I understand that we all ship different people on the show and several of these ships overlap. The isn’t Big Love, so not all of the ships can happen or at least stay together forever. What I don’t understand is how some people can make such rash decisions on people solely based on who they ship. Even if they support the opposite ship as you, that doesn’t mean you should automatically hate them. Just because they ship Swan Queen or Captain Swan, doesn’t make them a bad person. It doesn’t make them stupid or unintelligent. They just feel more connected or more invested in a different ship. Please don’t attack or judge people based on their ship, just like you shouldn’t judge people based on their race, gender, or orientation. Their ship doesn’t define who they are or how they act as a person. I’ve met so many awesome people from so many different ships and I feel some people don’t understand what their missing.
I totally know that not everyone in the fandom is nice. They’re are rude people who ships you hate, but there are also rude people who ship you like. Rude people are not confined to one ship. They exist in all, just like good people too. I just feel like some people are blinded by their ship. They just have this stereotype that the opposing ship is the enemy and shouldn’t like them. They think that if their fan base gets too large, they will have more of an effect on the writers or they just flat out think their fan base is better. This isn’t cool and it’s not how people should think. I can understand the reasoning for wanting your ship to beat the others, but the writers are going to write what they want no matter what everyone else thinks. Please don’t harass Adam or Jane or any of the other writers. This is their show and their vision. They have complete control over what they want to see come to life and they deserve that for giving us this show to watch. Without them, we wouldn’t have this show or these ships whether they come to light or not. We should be thanking them. They have a plan for what to come. We only see one episode a week, but they have the whole story planned out. It must be frustrating for them to know what happens and see us freaking out every week. We may think we know what will happen, but only they do. There is a plan and we just have to trust them. Not everyone will be happy. That’s life. Just thank the writers for what we have and don’t harass them.
I don’t think there is any best ship on Once Upon a Time. Even though it is a show about fairy tales, everyone can’t their happily ever after. Then, there would be no show. You need conflict and problems. Emma and Regina’s love lives are both crucial to the show. It’s so unpredictable. Everyone wants someone different for them. It makes the show suspenseful and makes you want to keep watching to see what will happen next. Every few episodes, you get your ship moment that makes you so happy and you keep waiting for the next one. This is what draws you to the show; the constant anticipation and excitement over what will happen with your ship. You need bad things to happen because it will make you so much happier when something good happens.
I just don’t tolerate hate towards innocent people. I don’t judge any ship. I only look down on people who are rude to me or other defenseless people. If you ship Captain Swan or Swanfire or Swan Queen or Rumbelle or Snowing or Outlaw Queen or any other ship on Once Upon a Time, I’d love to talk to you. It doesn’t matter who you ship, I just want to talk to people about my favorite show. I’d like to know why you ship who you ship and why you hate you hate. I want to know what you like about the show and what you don’t like about the show. I want to debate or what should/will happen in the future. I don’t care who you ship. If you are a nice person, I will be nice to you as well. Obviously, it doesn’t mean we’re going to be best friends, but it doesn’t mean we are destined to hate each other as well if we don’t ship the same things. I shouldn’t have to be afraid to post who I ship on twitter because I’m afraid people won’t like me for it. That’s just wrong and it shouldn’t happen. People can be so cruel and it really hurts me to see that.
Please know that I do understand the pain and frustration that happen with ships. I have been hurt by shows in the past that have gone in a direction I was hoping they weren’t. I have been mad and sad, yet have never taken my anger out on others. I strive to not be rude to those who ship what I don’t. I try to be happy for them and adapt to what I have been given. I have no control over a show. All I can do is choose to watch it and follow along. I enjoy watching and tweeting along with others to convey my thoughts and feelings and hear theirs as well. All I want are friends to talk about the show with who won’t judge me based on who I ship.
All in all, you can hate the ship, but please don’t hate the shipper.
Have a magical day folks.
